You’re probably reading this because you’re a CBD or hemp fan who has noticed the recurring trend of your favorite farmer owned brands lacking reviews. You love it, your friends love it, even grandma steals it from you when she sees you, yet they don’t let people share reviews? What’s the deal!
Hemp industry censorship is the likely culprit. Since hemp has gained mainstream attention over the past few years, many are wondering about the legitimacy of new companies popping up. Many of us rely on online reviews from others to help us decide if we are ready to buy a product or not – so why are new hemp companies not utilizing this online feature? It is most likely because they are not legally able to.
Current legislation prohibits companies from having “falsified statements” on their websites. While this is meant to protect the consumer, it often does the opposite in the case of legitimate hemp based products.
For example, if someone were to log on and leave a review saying. “This product worked great! Would recommend.” There would be no problems. Someone is simply giving their subjective point of view and not making any direct claims about the product.
Now, if someone were to leave a review saying “This product helped me manage my endometriosis pain.” That would cause problems. This is because the customer is directly claiming that the product aids an ailment that may or may not be true.
So, even if the falsified claim is coming from a well intended customer – the brand is still the one who would take the hit should a legal case manifest from the statement. This situation is why many in the industry have decided to cut the reviews from their online platforms entirely.
Doing so, while protecting the brand from conflict, takes away a vital resource for customers searching for input. There are many ways to check the validity of a business – and taking away a third party point of view is not a productive way to do it. While we hope this changes in the future, for now we encourage you to shop, support, and share your favorite brand in all the ways you can. (Purchasing, Following on Social Media, Telling Friends)
